Thoughts on Belgium
I am back after somewhat of a hiatus on this platform. One only tends to have a limited amount of writing energy and most of mine has devoted to writing E.I. & Time Corps, plus my column on www.comicnews.info, "From Day Dreams to Comics." In the meantime, things have continued apace on the planet & I have decided to comment upon the following: the current turmoil in the land of my birth, Belgium.
For those who don't know, the political class have been unable to form a government following the elections of this past June. There are two main villains here: the Vlaams Belang & Walloon politicians.
Let's first start with the Walloons. They are not joining up because they want the state to continue with subsidies to their region even though it is long past being the economic engine of the country and is now a rust belt zone that rivals the Midwest or the former Eastern Bloc for decrepitude. Said politicians, instead of leading their region through the painful but necessary task of retooling and revitalizing their region, have instead been sucking off the government tit like a puppy who refuses to be weaned. Of course, this pisses off the the portion of the country that is now the economic engine, Flanders, who's taxes funds this. Lest anyone mistake that I completely side with Flanders, I take this moment now to dissuade them of this notion.
One of the main drivers of Flemish aggressiveness is Vlaams Belang (the "legit" evolution of the Vlaams Blok). One of their main aims is the break up of the Belgian state. They also have some very nasty skeletons in their closet. Quite a few of their numbers come from that part of the Flemish community that actively and enthusiastically collaborated with the Nazis. In fact, one of their state stances is the remission of legal sanctions that the Belgian state imposed upon collaborators. There are certain crimes that are unforgivable and actively working with the most evil regime in the history of man is one of them. All those who worked with the Nazis deserve to die in shame. The second unsavory aspect amongst the many of the Vlaams Belang is their connections with the American corporate right wing such as the Heritage Foundation, among others. Naturally, they parrot the Heritage Foundation line that does not want a strong European Union. A strong European Union is not as dependent upon American military might as years past, which the Heritage Foundation does not want. In fact, the American right wing wants a divided Europe in need of a big brother America to come riding to the rescue. The Vlaams Belang plays their part in promoting that agenda like an obedient lap dog.
A third part of the Vlaams Belang agenda would probably get laughs even in front of Flemish audience: creation of a "Greater Netherlands." Let me get this right, you want Flanders to unite with the Kase Kopfs (I don't see the Dutch wanting anything to do with the Flemish either). All I've got to say about that is this: what are you smoking and where can I get some?
